After many months of anticipation, I
am excited to say, that I will be in Roatán, Honduras in just a few weeks. I decided to create a blog to share my experiences in Roatán with family and friends. I look forward to expanding my volunteer experience in a health care setting through this internship.
Honduras, like many other developing
countries is faced with a lack of access to health care. With minimal health
resources available, the impoverished communities often face numerous
illnesses.
I first witnessed the dramatic impact
that lack of access to healthcare can have on a community during my trip to
Mali while in high school. I traveled to a remote village in Mali for two weeks to
help build a school. The village was hours away from a healthcare facility and
the villagers had no cars. During my time there, an infant passed away from
diarrhea and dehydration. Seeing that this death could have been prevented (as
diarrhea is common and easily treated in the U.S.) saddened me. It opened my
eyes to the need for increased health care in underserved communities.
I always had a passion for helping
underserved communities, but this experience triggered me to realize that my
passion was to seek an education in health care.
Being able to gain knowledge, as an
individual, that will enable me to help others improve their health is so powerful. Being
able to educate patients about health issues and also treating and preventing
illnesses, seems so gratifying. Being able to improve the quality of an
individual’s life is invaluable.
I look forward to the hand-on
experience I will gain at the two clinics I will volunteer at during my time in
Roatán. I hope to expand my knowledge and extend my passion for becoming a future pediatric nurse practitioner. I also aim to help educate patients and help in
any way possible.
Aiming to have equal access and quality health care for underserved communities can improve the conditions of communities as a whole.

health is the greatest wealth.
